The 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene that spawned Bob Dylan is the setting for Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest, Inside Llewyn Davis, although the brothers admit that it’s the less-well-known Dave Van Ronk who provided its main inspiration. Oscar Isaac, whom some might recognize from Alejandro Amenábar’s Agora, plays the musician of the title struggling to make it in wintry New York. There’s support from Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and F. Murray Abraham, while regular Coens collaborator — and former Dylan guitarist — T. Bone Burnett produced the first-rate soundtrack.

Lone Survivor stars Mark Wahlberg in the true story of a group of four Navy SEALs sent on a mission to capture a Taliban strongman in Afghanistan, only to find themselves ambushed in the Hindu Kush. Based on the 2007 bestseller by former SEAL Marcus Luttrell, it also stars Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana, while Peter Berg (Battleship) directs.

An Hispanic offshoot of the found-footage horror franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones follows young Californian Latino Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) as he finds himself singled out for possession by the same demon who featured in the first four films.

The Intouchables actor François Cluzet stars as a sailor attempting the Vendée Globe single-handed round-the-world yacht race in En solitaire. As in that previous film, his character’s life is transformed by a young immigrant, whom he finds stowing away on his boat — and whose presence could lead to his disqualification.
